Before every performance whether it be before a game, a marching competition,or a winterguard competition
we do this little song thing. we say it in a circle and every time we say UP we releve' ( reach up high and get on our tip
toes) and when we say DOWN we grand plie` (crouch down knees bent) and when we say HALFWAY UP we demi plie` ( same as
a plie` but not down as far). We only do the moves when they're capitalized here. The song is called Rich Old Man
and it goes like this.
There was a rich old man
He had 10,000 men
He led them UP a hill
And he led the DOWN again
Cuz when you're UP you're up
And when you're DOWN you're down
But when you're only HALFWAY UP
You're neither UP
Or DOWN
And when we're marching in troop out on the competition field or even just for rehearsal, we have
a little song to keep everyone in step. Everytime we say LEFT we step on (surprise!) our left foot, same with the right-
LEFT RIGHT (pause)
You're wrong, it's not RIGHT it's LEFT
And you'll find it
LEFT RIGHT where you LEFT it
On the bus on our way to every single winterguard competition or football game or marching competition
we sing songs like "Dreaming of You" by Selena (that one's a MUST) and "Lean on Me" and all of the Disney Classics
and N'Sync songs!
And a full band tradition is that on every Friday morning after morning rehearsal, one of the sections
in band brings treats for the rest, goodies like doughnuts or Pop-Tarts. Every week, the sections compete for the
best breakfast with muffins or burritos or french toast sticks. But the guard always wins- we had eggs and sausage or bacon
this year!
Every Christmas, the guard does a Secret Santa Gift Exchange around the time that we present our
2 minute solos for our final exam
